Degrees of Difficulty

The following are examples of the sort of conditions you may find en route. They are “notional” descriptions based on experience.

  1. Easy: Sound surfaces, largely level, well defined paths, easily managed. May be some obstacles.*
  2. Moderately easy: As (1) above but occasional fairly gentle slopes. Some obstacles can be expected.
  3. Moderately difficult: Generally sound surfaces, possibly some tricky cambers (tilted paths), surfaces may be variable, from tarmac to grass. Somewhat steeper slopes may require hard pushing or slow progress on scooters. Obstacles should be expected. Some navigation may be required.
  4. Difficult: As (3) above, only more so! Company very desirable.
  5. Very difficult/challenging: Company essential. Pushing virtually impossible and scooters slow-going. Expect many – or all and more- of the problems listed in Grades 1-4.

*Obstacles: These may include steps, hidden/steep slopes, kissing gates, narrow bridges, tree roots, unsound pathways, loss of direction, awkward chambers, crossing thoroughfares carrying public traffic…!

Timing: Always very difficult to determine, and depends on the interest of the rambler. Rambling is not a race, but a leisurely activity.
